Sarath Fonseka finally accepts defeat at 2010 elections – Lambastes Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa for pushing him for 2010 election knowing that MR will win

BY J.Yogaraj – Senior Journalist – Announcer ( S L B C )

Every one in this world work for some benefits. They expect something in return directly or indirectly. On the other side, if somebody falls into a pit, there are few people who will help, but many will ignore or expect the disaster. This is human nature. This has happened in former army commander’s life as well. We saw SF contested in 2010 elections. SF was well promoted to go for the battle with MR. Parliamentarian Wijayadasa Rajapaksa was one who promoted SF , knowing that SF cannot match MR. But the interesting point is that SF realized it now , after 4 years after 2010 elections. In other words, this has happened at a time when the country is about face the next presidential election. After 4 years SF accepted the defeat in 2010 election. That is where we can appreciate SF for being generous and honest.

Anyway, the interesting point is that, the common opposition candidate has signed a agreement with many parties. Small and big parties having different views. There are a saying that too many cooks spoil the soup. If you have too many parties in the agreement, it will be very difficult to implement. Or sometimes it might backfire where one party’s interest may go against the other in the common agreement.

Former army chief and the unsuccessful Opposition candidate at the last presidential poll Sarath Fonseka recently lashed out at UNP MP Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe for the latter’s claim that the UNP had agreed a joint Opposition decision to field Fonseka though it knew he would not win.Gen. Fonseka was addressing the media at his head office at Pitakotte.

Responding to a query during live television interview on a private television, MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that the Opposition had realized Fonseka would certainly lose to president.

A frustrated Fonseka alleged that as Rajapakshe had appeared on his election platform and cheated those who believed in a victory for the Opposition.

Fonseka said that MP Rajapakshe had been one of his main speakers at the 2010 presidential election.”If Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe was aware of a certain defeat why on earth he appeared on my platform, Fonseka queried.

The former Chief of Defence Staff said that the UNP should clarify its position as regards Rajapakshe’s statement. Gen. Fonseka said that he didn’t want to consider Rajapakshe’s claim as that of the UNP’s position. The TV anchor asked MPWijedayasa whether the UNP was planning to say the same after losing the forthcoming presidential poll.

Gen. Fonseka earlier alleged that the government had rigged the election through a computer fraud. But now he has accepted the defeat.

Commenting on the JHU’s decision to quit ministerial portfolios, Gen. Fonseka said that he really appreciated the move. Asserting that the JHU had taken a courageous step to challenge dictatorial regime, but refused to comment further.

MRs comments

President Mahinda Rajapaksa says that it is the responsibility of all citizens to unite to carry forward the stability built up in the country, without being deceived by false propaganda. An unstable country will never be able to march towards development. Western nations are trying to bring into power leaders without any authority. The President was addressing a ceremony at the Temple Trees recently held in connection with felicitating conciliation board members who have represented the conciliation boards for the longest duration. No power should be allowed to subjugate in a different manner of the country, which was liberated from terrorism. President Rajapaksa has stressed that all must join hands to reconstruct the country to brighten the future of the younger generation. The western countries should never be given the opportunity to inculcate their cultural traits to the local culture. The President has further pointed out the importance to safeguard the future of the children through implementation of laws connected to the local culture in dissolving conflicts including family disputes.

Presidential Election :

We are not discussing a Common Candidate – JVP
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that it is not party to the discussions to nominate the Joint Oppositions Common Candidate, since it is of the view that the next presidential election will be illegal. The JVP’s Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath MP, told recently that his party did not accept the Supreme Court opinion that President Mahinda Rajapaksa could seek a third term. “We believe that it would be illegal for the incumbent to bid for re-election. It is on this basis that the People’s Movement for Democracy would be holding a protest march in Colombo tomorrow, opposing the holding of a presidential poll and calling for the abolition of the executive presidency. Asked if the JVP ruled out joining the Joint Opposition Front the MP replied that they shared the same ideals with regard to the abolition of the executive presidency, but refused to join the joint opposition. This raises doubts of JVPs double standards.MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake also stated in a recent public meeting that there is no SLFP or UNP in this country, it is only JVP has the ability to lead the country. This shows that JVP is looking for loop hole to find fault on the major political parties and encash from those weakness. People who try to score from other’s weakness are cowards. The party itself should have some better qualities to attract the mass. But JVP has failed in this process, in the past.

MP Herat said that if the Rajapaksa regime disregarded opinion of a vast number of people who believed that presidential rule was the  reason for the absence of democracy and the rule of law in the post war era and  announced the holding of a presidential election, they would at that stage decide what their future course of action would  be. Having said that how JVP joined hands with CBK way back in 2003-2004 ? If not for the president’s rule the war would not have been finished. It should be noted that it was R Premadasa’s President’s rule which brought JVP terror in 1988- 1989. Therefore it clearly shows that, JVP has a personal revenge problem with president’s rule.

MR says he will not give into the pressure of foreign forces

  • replies for the allegation of family rule

Speaking of the members of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) who have left the party, the President charged that the opposition United National Party’s strategy is to entrap SLFP members to achieve their political aspirations. He said the recent crossover was part of a plan of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

“Ranil Wickremasinghe and Chandrika Bandaranaike are now attempting to grab power by misleading the SLFP members and the general public,” the President alleged. But people will not fall prey for this.

Referring to the common complaint of family rule, the President said he only brought his brother Gotabhaya Rajapaksa into the fold as Defense Secretary since he needed someone who he can trust to lead the battle against the terrorists. The other two brothers, Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa were elected by the people, the President pointed out.

The President said however, the public are intelligent and he has faith in the public that they would not fall into the traps setting up by the opposition. All the patriotic people have now joined hands with government to bring the country forward, the President said. President also referred the Bandaranayke family rule and one of the member is still active in politics ( CBK). CBK is now in the opposition den to support opposition candidate which is basically a betrayal to CBK’s father SWRDs party and the people.

The bottom line question remains that, what is the major problem identified in this present government. There can be some issues relating to administration, but when it comes to political stability, sustainable peace, security & protection, the country is on the right direction. Even a rational thinking person will accept that, the country does not have any major issues. The people are not worried about executive presidency until it disturbs their day to day work. But the country has not come to that state. If this is the case , any ordinary citizen will never try to unseat the incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksa. MR seems to be much better than Maithripala , since MR has eliminated the 3 decades long terrorism and brought some sought of stability to the country , so that the people who did not have any future before , can now think  of bright future. Some elements may talk about corruption charges , but the person who proposing this (CBK) should think for while , whether were she able to control corruption during her regime ? So they should not throw stone staying inside glass houses.

There was a time when the month of November dawns, people get afraid. They always remember the birthday of LTTE leader V Prabakaran. But now that era is gone. Now the people in this country are happy to see the November,

In November they always remember the birthday of incumbent president Rajapaksa, which gives the common public a better confidence and happiness.

The people of this country will have an opportunity to franchise their voting right without fear. But the people will think for a while before voting , who brought this peaceful environment. Even some people can go against the ruling government, but majority will stay with the government which brought peace to this country.

Corruption is found in any government. The previous governments have better records on corruption, But credit should be given to the government which tries to minimize this corruption.

  1. Only way I believe Mahinda could win is by vote rigging. Due to methods adopted by Elections Dept. this may not be possible. But hacking the elections dept computers is a possibility. Final results would be announced from the data in the computers. Even the results sent from the counting centers were entered correctly these could be altered by hacking. If, due to this, once Mahinda declared as a winner and opposition contested the result, the Elections Commissioner would advice them to go for legal action. It would be futile attempt as Courts, Forces and all other elements are under the control of Mahinda.

    so beware of this
