A ceremony has been organised to mark the 55th death anniversary of former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, today at the Bandaranaike Samadhi at Horagolla, Nittambuwa. Late Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the first woman prime minister of the world will also be commemorated at the ceremony.
S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike was the fourth Prime Minister of independent Ceylon. He came to power in April 1956 and was the Prime Minister until he was assassinated in September 1959. His death created immense shock and grief among the people at that time.
He was elected to the Colombo Municipal Council in 1926. From 1931, he was a Member of the State Council and then from 1947 until his death he was a Member of Parliament.
Bandaranaike was famous around the world as a brilliant orator.
He has taken a number of important political decisions for the wellbeing of Sri Lanka forming Employees Provident Fund, Peopalizing some British owned companies are among them.
Meanwhile, 14th death anniversary of late Prime Minister Sirimawo Bandaranaike will also be commemorated today. She is the first lady Prime Minister in Sri Lanka and the world.
Former Prime Ministers S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Mrs. Sirimawo Bandaranaike will be commemorated today.
