The Health Ministry says adding pictorial warnings on packets of tobacco products will help to minimize smoking to a certain extent. Head of the non communicable disease unit in the ministry Dr. Thilak Siriwardena says the government has to spend a large sum of money for treatment for the persons who fall ill due to smoking. Some injections given to cancer patients are amounting to 1.5 million rupees. A wider attention has been focused globally to discourage smoking. Pictorial warnings on tobacco products will appear in Sri Lanka from the 1st of January. |
