The Ministry of Defence and Urban Development states that a methodical process has been implemented to handover the gold jewellery stolen by the LTTE to their rightful owners. During the Wanni humanitarian operation, the Army was able to recover a large stock of gold at the banks maintained by the LTTE. The government took steps to handover the jewellery mortgaged by the owners after the security forces found the name lists of the owners. Military spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said that 2,377 owners have been identified from Mullativu, Wanni and Mannar districts. The name lists of the owners who certified their identity, are being publicly displayed at Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullativu, Wanni and Mannar districts Military Civil Coordinating Offices. The Army requests the public to visit the relevant Civil Coordinating Offices and to get their unclaimed jewellery by certifying their identity.
