Sri Lanka will mark World Children’s Day with a national event at the Maharagama Youth Centre this morning under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and first lady madam Shiranthi Rajapaksa. The ceremony, held under the theme ‘Protect Us with Love’ is organized by the Child Development and Women’s Affairs Ministry. Minister Tissa Karaliyadda speaking on this year’s programs organised by the ministry to mark the event said it has been designed with the aim of raising public awareness on the importance of ensuring the well being of children and their social rights.

The Child Development and Women’s Affairs Ministry in a release on this year’s theme stated that the protection and welfare of a child primarily lies in the hands of the family members including parents and added that leisure is important and is a right of a child.
The ministry has also planned to celebrate Children’s Day with a range of innovative and fun filled activities at schools and other institutions at regional level to make it a special day for children to enjoy their childhood to coincide with the main event.
The events and activities of the Children’s Day festival will also focus on identifying the education, recreation, health, cultural, economic and social needs of children.
