The Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints Regarding Missing Persons is currently conducting public sittings in Kilinochchi District. The Commission commenced its sitting on Sept. 27th.
The Commission is hearing cases of disappearances and abductions in Kilinochchi district for a second time due to the large number of complaints it received from the district.
The Commission is scheduled to hear a total of 180 cases. In the First two days of sittings, 45 new complaints were registered with the Commission and the 69 old cases and 10 new cases were interviewed by the Commission.
Another 50 cases from the Poonagary Divisional Secretariat will be inquired on September 29 and on the last day the Commission will hear 30 cases from Karachchi Divisional Secretariat division.
The Commission had previously conducted public sittings in January, February, March, June and July of this year in Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu and again in Batticaloa respectively.
Since the Establishment of the Commission on 15th August 2013, the Commission up to date has received 19,471 complaints inclusive of approximately 5000 complaints from relatives of missing security forces personnel.
The Commission has thus far inquired into 939 complaints, which are being analyzed for further investigations through an independent investigation team.
