The President says the UPFA government headed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party could consolidate the freedom to the whole nation.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa says the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has a historical heritage to celebrate the 63rd anniversary in the Uva province where historical battles were fought for the freedom of the country. The UPFA government headed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party could consolidate the freedom to the whole nation by winning the expectation of 1818 fight carried out by Weera Keppetipola although it was unsuccessful at that time. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party was born to establish the national freedom. The president pointed out that all ethnic groups have gathered around the party as it provided the public heritage.
He made these remarks addressing the 63rd anniversary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party which is being conducted at the Badulla city under the theme of “Sri Lanka and Freedom”. A large number of party representatives are present at the occasion. The president further said that the SLFP has been able to form a government within three years of its inception. The party has gained a massive strength from the general public. The SLFP led governments have been able to remove British camps established in Trincomalee, Katunayake and many other areas in Sri Lanka. When the UPFA government came into power 2005 the state sector has been weakened and the national economy was in a decline.
However, the government has been able to boost the economic growth up to 8 percent at present. The foreign reserve was at 2 billion US dollars at 2005. The number has increased upto 9 Billion US dollars today. The government has been able to provide electricity for each household at present. Unemployment rate has reduced up to 4 percent. Poverty level is also at 6 percent today. The inflation has decreased up to 4 percent. Addressing the convention SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithreepala Sirisena said the SLFP has come forward despite the assassination of its pioneer leader S.W.R.D Bandaranaike and the depriving of civil rights of the next leader late Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Under the present leadership of the party many problems in Sri Lanka had been solved. General Secretary of the UPFA Minister Susil Premajayanth said that Sri Lanka Freedom Party is the biggest social organization established in the island.
