The former Chief Justice, Shirani Bandaranayake has been reinstated by President Maithripala Sirisena with a special Cabinet Paper. Shirani Bandaranayake was impeached by the parliament of Sri Lanka with 155 votes for and 49 votes against.
The former Chief Justice’s impeachment included following charges.
- Failure to disclose how she obtained $146,000 to pay for a house
- Taking control of several cases removing judges violating conflict of interest rules
- Failure to declare 20 bank accounts including four foreign currency accounts containing $260,000
